Position Description:

An Inside Sales Engineering position is dedicated to bidding and presale design of custom HVAC systems while managing the day to day activities of assigned accounts and markets.  An individual in this position should have strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as, a high technical/engineering ability.  From time to time this individual will be asked to communicate with clients via phone/fax/e-mail/face to face.  A background in mechanical engineering, technical sales, and great visualization skills are a plus.  This is a salaried position with a minimum of 40 hours/week required.  As with any salaried professional position the actual number of hours required will be determined by workload.  The supervisor for this position is the Johnson Product Sales Manager.    

Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Perform supporting role for all Sales Representatives and Johnson Product Sales Manager.
  • Read and interpret technical specifications (Bid documents) and plans (Blueprints).  Compile this information such that an accurate estimate is available to develop final bid pricing.
  • General understanding of project terms and conditions with regard to how they impact pricing.
  • Ability to apply common HVAC unit components in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, Johnson design standards, as well as industry standards.
  • Develop "Project Proposal Specification" or scope of work using applicable information from bid documents and component selections.  Format of scope to be consistent with current Johnson scope guidelines.
  • Travel is required on large projects and/or occasional presentations. 
  • Develop and maintain "positive productive" relationships with Factory Representatives, Engineers, Vendors and other accounts and contacts. 
  • Update and maintain data base such that bookings projections report and shipping projections report are accurate.  Individual quote files to be kept to a minimum of 30 days current via follow up calls and reporting.
  • Provide support to Sales Coordinator to all for maintenance and update "Quote Log".
  • Manage and prioritize workload as customer defined deadlines are requested and adjusted on a daily basis.  Target completion of each quote 24 hours prior to request date of customer for accurate PEER review.
  • Paper quote files to be organized and filed in main quote file cabinets when not in use.  Support Sales Coordinator by maintaining electronic files on cloud and notifying St. Louis Office of updates..
  • Develop estimating/sales tools to benefit all of Sales and Application Engineering as defined by supervisor.  Provide any received vendor cost updates to Application Engineering for update in Johnson Estimating Program.
  • Upon the receipt of an order, the Order Entry must be processed in 1 business day.  Order Entry content and format to be consistent with current Johnson standards and all documents submitted to Management for Approval.  ALL pricing files saved in appropriate locations on the cloud.
  • Initiate hand over conference call or meeting with assigned Application Engineer.
  • Desire and ability to work in a Team Environment with occasional requests to function in other job roles without issue.  Cross training in other areas of the company is essential to Johnson's success and the Sales Engineers Growth.
  • Manage day to day activity and motivate sales network to perform working with the Johnson Product Sales Manager.
  • Assist Application Engineering in PEER review of submittal to confirm items submitted as agreed in "selling" process.
  • Protect the Company in day to day duties while maintaining great relationships with customers of all types.


  • Bachelors of Science Mechanical Engineering

Skills & Abilities:

  • General computer knowledge with emphasis in the following software applications: Word, Excel, Outlook, and AutoCAD.
  • Proficient in technical writing that will be utilized in all forms of internal and field communication.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and visualize concepts.
  • Ability to travel as needed both in the US and Internationally.
  • Great organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks on-time.
